Puri Rath Yatra 2024 Schedule - Bahuda Yatra, Suna Besha Date - Puri Sri Jagannath Festival Date & Info

Puri Rath Yatra is on July 7, 2024 (Sunday).

Puri Rath yatra is celebrated on Ashada Shukla Paksha Dwitya i.e., 2nd day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha month (June-July)

Lakhs of devotees will gather at Bada Danda to watch Sri Jagannath Rath being drawn to Gundicha Mandir, about two miles away from Srimandira, on this day

- 10 May, 2024 - Friday - Akshya Tritiya (Beginning of Construction of Chariots for Rath Jatra), Chandan Yatra Start

- 22 June, 2024 - Saturday - Snana Jatra (Abhishek of Deities on Snan Purnima)

- 6 July, 2024 - Saturday - Nabajauban Darshan & Netrastova in ShreeMandira (1st Darshan of Deities after a fortnight from Snana Purnima)

- 7 July, 2024 - Sunday - Puri Rath Yatra - SriGundicha Yatra

- 8 July, 2024 - Monday - Deities reach Saradha Bali in Gundicha Mandir with their Chariot

About Puri Rath Jatra:


The presiding deities of Sri Mandira, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra Rath with the celestial wheel Sudharsana are taken out of temple precincts to their respective Chariots in a ritual called Pahandi.

Lord Jagannatha ratha is called as Nandighosha - It has 16 wheels, and is about 44 feet high. It is wrapped with yellow, red clothes

Lord Balabhadra chariot is called Taladwaja - It has 14 wheels and is about 43 feet high. It is wrapped with red bluish green clothes

Goddess Subhadra rath is called Darpadalana - It has 12 wheels and is about 42 feet high. It is wrapped with Red, Black coloured clothes

Puri Jagadguru Shankaracharya will have 1st darshan of Deities Lord Balabhdra, Goddess Subhadra, Lord Jagannath in the Rath.

The Gajapati King will sweep the rath of Lord Jagannath and other deities with golden broom. The ritual is called as Chhera Pahanra.

After elaborate rituals, The Taladwaja is pulled first, then the Darapadalana and finally the Nadighosha is drawn to the Gundicha Mandir which is about 2 miles from the Srimandira.

Normally Chief Minister of Odisha will attend the Puri Rath Yatra and pull the Rath first. Normally Governor of Odisha & Union Ministers can also be seen pulling the Rath

Lord Jagannath will stay at his Aunt house in Gundicha Mandir for about 7 days and return back to Sri Mandira. The Return Yatra is called as Bahuda Jatra

After Bahuda Jatra, Lakhs will throng to have darshan of Suna Besha (Badatadhau Behsa), Adhara Pana, Niladri Bije.
