Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on 19 August 2024 (Monday). Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the Purnima (full moon day) of Sharavana month.
On Raksha Bandan, sisters of all ages tie Rakhi on the wrists of their brothers, as symbol of love and protecting them. Brothers in return will give gifts to their sisters.
This gesture potentially invests the share of well being of the sisters with the brothers. Raksha Bandhan is a Sanskrit term which literally means 'bond of protection, care'
Before tying Rakhi, sisters would perform an aarti, apply tilak (by mixing rice grains and roli) on the forehead of their brothers. Then sisters will offer sweat to their brothers.
In villages, married women will travel to the parent homes, during the festival, to tie rakhi to their brothers. After the festival, Brothers will accompany their sisters back to their married home.
In 2024, Sharavan Purnima starts at around 3.00 am on August 19 (Monday) very early morning and ends at around 1.07 am on August 20 (Tuesday) very early morning
