Pittuku Man Sumantha Leelai
The Leela of Lord Shiva carrying sand to help old devotee and in return getting Puttu (a sweet food made of rice) will be enacted during Avani Moolam Thiruvizha.
Lord Sundareswarar will come to Pittu Thoppu. Sivaachariar will bring sand from River Vaigai and enact the leelai. Temple will be closed on this day. Vrishabaruda Darshan in the night.
More Info: Once when Pandya King was ruling Madurai, River Vaigai started overflowing. The King ordered that each household must send 1 person to build bank along River Vaigai.
This order caused immense worry to one physically very old devotee who was selling Puttu. She was alone in her house and was not in a position to do the physically demanding work.
The devotee prayed Lord Shiva, who answered her prayer. Lord Shiva appeared as an ordinary man in front of her and offered to lift sand on her behalf. In return Lord Shiva ate the Puttu given by devotee.
Lord Shiva completed his work and slept because of tiredness. The King who was supervising the work, got angry when he saw a person (Lord Shiva) sleeping. The King lashed at the back of Lord Shiva with a bamboo stick.
Alas! All the creatures in the World including the King felt the pain of the lash. The King realised that it is Lord Shiva himself who came to work and apologised. This sporting of Lord carrying sand for Puttu is enacted on Avani Moolam.
