Sri Vamana is the Avatar of Lord Vishnu. Sri Vamana took Avatar on Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha Dwadashi to Rishi Kashyap and Maata Aditi.
King Bali was conducting 100th Ashwamedha Yaga sacrifice. To protect Devatas, Sri Vamana, as a kid Brahmachari, went to King Bali Yaagashala to get a gift.
King Bali offered Sri Vamana riches, but Sri Vamana sought just 3 steps of land measured by his foot. King Bali offered the gift as sought by Sri Vamana.
Sri Vamana became Thrivikrama, measured the entire Earth with 1 foot, entire heavenly worlds with second foot.
There was no place to measure 3rd step of land. King Bali offered his head to be measured as 3rd step with the holy feet of God. Sri Vamana sent King Bali to Pathala Loka.
In Sringeri, on Sri Vamana Ekadashi Jagadguru Shankaracharya will perform Sri Vamana Chaturyama Puja after Sri Chandramouleeshwara Puja at Night.
During Puja, Katha will be read by Jagadguru in praise of Sri Vamana. Next day on Vamana Jayanthi i.e., Sri Vamana Dwadashi, Homam, Uttara Puja will be performed in the morning.
