Srimad Valmiki Ramayan - Bala Kanda - Sloka 1 to 10 Translation

 - Narada Muni visits hermitage of Tapasvi Valmiki - Valmikiji queries about a single perfect individual bestowed with all good qualities enumerated by him - Narada Muni knower of past, present and future describes virtues, qualties of Sri Ram - Narrates briefly the story of his life

1.1.1 - Tapasvi Valmiki enquired of Narada Muni, preeminent among the sages ever engaged in the practice of religious austerities or study of the Vedas and best among the eloquent

1.1.2 - "Who in this world lives today with excellent qualities, prowess, righteousness, gratitude (who even remembers little help done by others) , truthfulness and firmness in his vows (till such time he achieves the results) ?"

1.1.3 -  Who is that one gifted with good conduct, given to the well-being of all living creatures, learned in the lore (knowledge of all things that is known), capable of doing things which others can not do and who solely delightful in appearance to everyone?

1.1.4 - Who among men is self restrained? Who has conquered anger? Who is endowed with brilliance and who is free from envy (envy depicting one's merit as weak points) ? Who is the one when excited to wrath in the battle makes even the Devatas afraid of?

1.1.5 - O Maharishi, I intend to hear about such a virtuous man whom you are able to place? Indeed great is my curiosity"

1.1.6 - Invited by Tapasvi Valmiki to take his seat Narada Muni, knower of the three worlds heard him and said with delight, "Listen to me". And thus spoke

1.1.7 - "O Muni Valmikiji rare indeed are men endowed with many qualities you have described. I ascertained one. Listen carefully"

1.1.8 - People have heard his name as Rama (one who delights others), who is born in the race of Ikshvaku, having steady nature (meaning thereby immutable form), possessing incomprehensible prowess, self-effulgent, self-commanding and subjecting senses under his control (subjecting the entire world under his control)

1.1.9 - Sri Rama is a great intellectual, adherent to rules (ethical statecraft philosophy), eloquent, handsome, destroyer of foes (sins), broad-shouldered, strong armed, having conch-shaped neck and prominent cheeks

1.1.10 - Possessing a broad chest, armed with a great bow, with fleshy collar bones, knee-long arms, a noble head, a large & beautiful forehead and great prowess, he is the destroyer of foes (sins)
