- of direct perception by the mind. No doubt it is only in the scriptures that the double nature of the Ego as made up of sentient and insentient elements
- is clearly distinguished; but the existence of the Ego as such is experienced by all as "I". The Ego does not in himself belong to any such class as woman.
- It is only when in association with an upadhi or medium of manifestation that the Ego is said to be a woman or so. In the same Upanishad this truth
- is taught in the following words:- "He is neither a woman nor a man; nor is he a eunuch. Whatever body he takes, with that he is associated" (Svetasvatara Upanishad 5-10)
- That is to say, he is given the name of that body. Moreover, the Maitreyas clearly describe the nature of Jiva as a doer in the following words:-
- "There is indeed anither, a lower one, called bhutatman, the elemental soul, who, assailed by bright or dark fruits of action, obtainsaccordingly honorable or mean births;
- and thus his course is upward or downward, and he wanders assailed by the various pairs." (Maitri Upanishad 3-2). There is a lower self called bhutatman,
- distinct from the Paramatman who has been described before as "He that is pure." The subtle elements of matter evolve into the linga-sarira, the subtle body
