- of the elephant, the gnat, and other bodies of various sorts, the Ego is said to be of the size of the thumb by attributing to him the size of the heart wherein he dwells
- And the Ego is like the Sun. As the Sun does not stand in need of a lamp or other external light outside the orb for the illumination of that orb
- so too the Ego requires no external means wherewith to become conscious of himself, because he is himself Consciousness
- Objection: Though he does not stand in need of the eye and other external organs, he does stand in need of manas; for all such notions as "I am happy,"
- "I am miserable" are necessarily preceded by thought, as declared in the sruti "what one thinks of by manas, that he utters by the tongue;" (Taittiriya-Samhita 5-11)
- and all philosophers proclaim that speech is preceded by the thought of what is intended to be spoken.
- Answer: Granted that speech is preceded by thought; and this thought concerns itself only with the appropriate word to be used
- when the thing to be spoken of has already been cognised, inasmuch as, with reference to a thing not already cognised, it is impossible to determine which is the proper word to be used
- Accordingly, the mind, proceeding towards the insentient external objects, first causes the thing to flash and then thinks of the appropriate word to be used; and then man speaks.
