Diwali October 2024 Date - In Tamil Nadu, Chennai Deepavali - This Year Diwali Festival Dates

In Tamil Nadu, Deepavali is celebrated on Naraka Chaturdashi on October 31, 2024 (Thursday)

- Theipirai Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi Tithi starts at 2.19 pm on Oct 30th and ends at 4.21 pm on Oct 31st

Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya, in most parts of India including Delhi, Gujarat etc on October 31, 2024 (Thursday).

- Amavasai Tithi starts at 4.21 pm on Oct 31st and ends at 6.20 pm on Nov 1st

In Karnataka, Bali Padyami Deepavali is celebrated on November 2, 2024 (Saturday)

- Valarpirai Shukla Paksha Padyami Tithi (also known as Pratipada / Prathamai) starts at 6.20 pm on Nov 1st and ends at 7.59 pm on Nov 2nd

Diwali means 'arrangement of lights in a row'. This year Diwali in North India & Deepavali in Tamil Nadu are celebrated on same day i.e., on October 31st.

In Tamil Nadu South India, Deepavali is celebrated on Theipirai Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi (called as Naraka Chaturdashi) in remembrance of the killing of Narakasura by Goddess Satyabama wife of Sri Krishna

In North India including Delhi, Gujarat etc, Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya. Many will pray Goddess Lakshmi to grant them wealth.

In Karnataka, Bali Padya Deepavali is celebrated to mark the visit of King Bali to Earth. The Festival is celebrated on Kartik Maas Shukla Paksha Prathamai Day. Go Puja, Baleendra Puja are done on this day

Important Festival Dates during Diwali:


1) Dhanteras - Oct 29th - Tuesday
-- The auspicious day to buy Silver, Steel. Also known as Dhan Tryodashi.
-- Theipirai Krishna Paksha Trayodashi Tithi starts at 12.18 pm on Oct 29th and ends at 2.19 pm on Oct 30th

2) Choti Diwali - Oct 30th - Wednesday.
-- In North India Narak Chaturdashi Choti Diwali is celebrated on Oct 30th -- whereas in Tamil Nadu, Naraka Chaturdasi Deepavali is celebrated on Oct 31st.
-- Theipirai Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi Tithi starts at 2.19 pm on Oct 30th and ends at 4.21 pm on Oct 31st
-- On Naraka Chaturdashi, Lord Krishna and Goddess Satyabhama destroyed Narakasura.

- Kali Chaudas is celebrated in North India on Oct 30th, 2024 (Wednesday)
- Kali Puja in West Bengal is celebrated on Oct 31st, 2024 (Thursday)

3) Diwali - Oct 31st - Thursday
-- Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya in North India. Lakshmi Puja will be done with great devotion on this day.
-- Amavasai Tithi starts at 4.21 pm on Oct 31st and ends at 6.20 pm on Nov 1st

4) Govardhan Puja - Nov 2nd - Saturday
-- Devotees prepare Annakut & offer it to Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Giri on this day with his little finger. It is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Pratipada in Kartik Maas.
-- Valarpirai Prathamai i.e., Shukla Paksha Pratipada Tithi starts at 6.20 pm on Nov 1st and ends at 7.59 pm on Nov 2nd

- Vikram Samvat i.e., beginning of New Year in Gujarat is celebrated on Nov 2nd, 2024 (Saturday)
- In Karnataka Bali Pratipada / Padwa / Kartika Shudda Padyami is celebrated on Nov 2nd, 2024 (Saturday)

5) Bhai Dooj - Nov 3rd - Sunday
-- Its a celebration of Brother-Sister affection. Sisters invite their Brothers to their homes on Bhai Dooj, apply Tikka and offer delicious sweets. Brothers in turn will offer small gifts to their Sisters. Also known as Bhai Bheej / Bhhaya Duj, It is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Dwitiya in Kartik Maas
-- Valarpirai Shukla Paksha Dwitiya Tithi starts at 7.59 pm on Nov 2nd and ends at 9.14 pm on Nov 3rd.

Deepavali in Tamil Nadu:


On Deepavali in Tamil Nadu, People will wake up early in the morning, take oil bath, wear new dress, do puja in their home by offering varieties of sweets to god and burst crackers.

The courtyard will be decorated with colourful Rangoli and flowers. Devotees will go to temple to have darshan of God.

Greetings and gifts will be exchanged with neighbours and relatives. At night, whole nation will decorate their house with diya - the traditional lamp.

The preparation for Diwali Festival begins months in advance. Tickets in trains, buses, flight would be sold off the day booking starts. Textile shops will be flooded with people to buy new clothes in the months leading to Diwali.

Next Year Diwali:
In 2025, Diwali is celebrated on October 20, 2025 (Monday)
