Sri Narasimha Jayanthi is celebrated on 11 May 2025 (Sunday). Bhagwan Lord Vishnu took avatar as Sri Narasimhar on Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi.
Sri Narasimhar appeared from broken pillar with half lion body and half human body to save his devotee Prahalada and to kill the demon Hiranyakashipu.
Sringeri Jagadguru Shankaracharaya in his Anugraha Bhashanam said Lord Narasimha took avatar for two reasons.
- one is to show his omnipresence i.e., his present everywhere and
- second is to make true his devotee Prahalada's assertion that God is there in the Pillar too.
On the occasion of Sri Nrisimha Jayanti, Sringeri Jagadguru Shankaracharaya will perform special puja to Lord Lakshmi Narasimha in the afternoon.
Vedic chants comprising of Narayana Sukta, Purusha Sukta and Vishnu Sukta will fill the air during the Abhishekam of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha.
After Maha Mangala Aarti, Jagadguru Shankaracharaya will read portions of Bhagavatam in praise of Lord Narasimha
Hiranyakashipu's Boon & Lord Narasimha Avatar:
Hiranyakasipu did severe Tapas and got boon from Lord Brahma that he must not be killed
- 1) by any Creations of Lord Brahma,- 2) during night or day, - 3) in indoors nor in outdoors, - 4) on Earth or in the Sky, - 5) by weapon which is animate (i.e., with life) or inanimate (i.e., without life)
Lord Vishnu took avatar as Lord Narasimha, met the conditions of boon and killed the demon. The way the conditions are met are as follows
1) Lord Narsimha appeared from the Pillar in the form of Half Man & Half Lion.
2) Lord Narasimha took avatar in evening Twilight Sunset Sandhya Period, which cannot be termed as either day nor night but is a period between day and night
3) Lord Narasimha dragged Hiranyakashipu to Doorway of Palace. Doorway is neither indoor or outdoor but a Threshold between indoor and outdoor
4) Lord Narasimha laid Hiranyakasipu on his Thigh Lap. Thigh Lap is neither Earth nor the Sky
5) Lord Narasimha teared apart Hiranyakasipu's body with his Claws Nails and killed the demon. Claw nails are neither inanimate nor animate weapon
