Vasant means 'Spring' and Panchami means 'fifth day'. The festival marks the arrival of Spring. Vasant Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of bright fortnight of Magha month (January-February)
Vasant Panchami is celebrated as 'Sri Saraswathi Puja'. Devotees will pray Goddess Saraswathi, the Goddess of Knowledge with great devotion.
Young children will start their education on this auspicious day. Elders will encourage babies to start learning by writing the first words with their fingers.
In North India, people will dress themselves in yellow colour clothes, offer yellow coloured flowers to God, share yellow coloured sweets and eat yellow coloured cooked rice.
In Sringeri, the ruling pontiff Jagadguru Shankaracharya will do special puja to Goddes Sharadamba on Sri Lalitha Panchami. Goddess Sharadamba will bless devotess in 'Sri Veena Saraswathi Alankara'
