Pongal, the harvest festival in Tamil Nadu, is celebrated on January 14, 2025 (Tuesday).
Auspicious Time to keep Pongal is in the Noon from 12.00 pm to 1.00 pm IST on January 14, 2025 (Tuesday).
Important Festival Dates:
- Bhogi - Jan 13th (Monday) - People will segregate and discard things that are no longer useful to them on this day
- Pongal - Jan 14th (Tuesday) - People will worship Sun God for Good harvest in the year. The festival is celebrated on the first day of Tamil month 'Thai'
- Mattu Pongal - Jan 15th (Wednesday) - Bulls and Cows will be worshiped on this day. 'Maadu' means Cow / Bull in Tamil
- Kaanum Pongal - Jan 16th (Thursday) - 'Kaanum; means 'To see'. People will go on a tour for sight seeing & celebrate Kaanum Pongal.
Thus the duration of Festival Celebration spans for 4 days from Bhogi to Kaanum Pongal.
Pongal Rituals:
People thank the Sun God, for the good harvest in the year, by offering sweet named 'Pongal'. On the day of Pongal, people will rise early, take bath, wear new dress, decorate the courtyard with Kolam (Rangoli) and flowers.
At the auspicious time, people will start making 'Pongal' prasadam using rice, jaggery, ghee, tender coconut, dry fruits, cardamom etc. When the Pongal in the Pot, overflows people will joyfully whoop 'Pongalo Pongal'.
Vegetables, fruits, coconut, sugarcane (karumbu in Tamil), turmeric and ginger saplings will be also be offered to God in a Banana leaf. Then Deeparadhanai will be done. Greetings, gifts will be exchanged with relatives and neighbours.
