- Rahul Gandhi has been sentenced to 2-year jail for alleging all Thieves have Modi surname in 2019 Parliamentary election rally at Kolar, Karnataka
- BJP Surat MLA Purnesh Modi had filed defamation case in the Surat District Court against Rahul Gandhi for the Modi surname remark
- Surat Court found Rahul Gandhi guilty under section 499/500 of IPC, sentenced him 2 years jail imprisonment. Then the District Court granted Rahul Gandhi bail and also suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow appeal in higher Judiciary.
- Rahul Gandhi appeared in the Surat Court today for Judgement. In Court Rahul Gandhi had said whatever he had mentioned were not intentional
- The petitioner had called for maximum punishment. Surat District Judge pronounced 2 year jail imprisonment which is the maximum punishment as per law
- After verdict, Rahul Gandhi quoted Gandhiji that he believes in Truth and Non-violence. While BJP questioned him if its right to insult people based on caste name
- There is buzz in media over whether Rahul Gandhi immediate disqualification as MP with this sentencing. Disqualification talk is doing rounds on basis of Supreme Court Judgement on July 10, 2013
