Bhishma Pitamaha:
- Bhishma Pitamaha is the son of Shantana Maharaja and Maa Ganga Devi. He was named Devavrata by his parents. Bhishmar is also called as Gangaputra.
- Purana says Bhishmar is one of the Ashta Vasu and had to take birth in this World because of a curse
- Devavrata was named the crown prince of Hastinapur. Later during the hunting trip, Shantanu Maharaja fell in love with Mata Satyavati.
- Mata Satyavati's Father laid condition that he will give consent for their Marriage only if the Son of Mata Satyavati be made the heir of Hastinapur Kingdom
- Shantanu Maharaja didn't accept the condition and was filled with sorrow. Devavrata seeing the sadness of his Father Shantanu Maharaja, enquired the reason and went to Mata Satyavati's Father
- Devarata gave consent to the condition of Mata Satyavati's Father and said he will not become King and the son of Mata Saryavati will be heir of Hastinapur Kingdom
- When Mata Satyavatis Father raised doubt that the heir of Devavrata might lay claim to become Future King, Gangaputra said that he will not marry and took a vow of lifelong Brahmacharya. From then on Devavrata was called as 'Bhishm'
- Shantanu Maharaja on knowing the vow of his Son, gave a boon to Gangaputra that death will approach Bhishm only when he wishes to die.
- Bhishma Pitamaha during Kurukshetra Dharma Yudh, was suspended in the arrow bed by Arjuna, At the end of war as per Lord Sri Krishna's wish, Bhishmar many lessons on Dharma to King Yudhistra and also taught Vishnu Sahasranamam
- Bhishmar utilised his Fathers boon and was waiting for the arrival of Uttarayana to leave his mortal body. Bhisha Ashtami is observed on the next day of Ratha Saptami.
